Breaking HRT News!

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is in the headlines once again, but this time the news is good! Researchers evaluating the data from the federally funded Women’s Initiative Study have declared that their initial statements about HRT and cardiovascular disease were incorrect. In 2002, the researchers initially announced that women undergoing HRT were at an increased risk for heart attack and stroke, leading many women to discontinue hormone treatments for their menopausal symptoms. The new findings, however, indicate that women who begin taking hormones shortly after menopause do not have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. As a matter of fact, HRT appears to have a cardioprotective affect, reducing calcification of the arteries, a key indicator of atherosclerosis. The data showed that women taking estrogen for 7 years or more (after menopause) were able to lower their arterial calcification by as much as 60%. The only group of women who were still at risk of heart attack or stroke were those who delayed undergoing HRT for at least 10 years after menopause.

All patients currently under Holly’s care will experience a smooth transition to our other providers. All charts and histories will be available to the provider of their choice so there will be no interruption or delay of medical care.
