Bone Density Evaluation
Osteoporosis and low bone mass affect an estimated 43.6 million Americans. As a result,
this population is at an increased risk for fractures, particularly of the hip and spine.
There is a normal rate of decline in bone mass with age in both men and women. In
addition to age, menopause causes an extra degree of bone loss in women, greatest in the
first 3 to 6 years following.
Osteopenia and osteoporosis are very treatable when early diagnosis is made. Testing is
recommended for all women over 50 and for men and women with the following risk
factors.
- History of fracture as an adult or in a 1st degree relative
- Body weight of less than 127 pounds
- Advanced age
- Current cigarette smoking
- Use of corticosteroid therapy for more than 3 months
- Impaired vision
- Estrogen deficiency before age 45
- Dementia
- Poor health/ frailty
- Recent falls
- Low calcium intake
- Low physical activity
- Alcohol intake (more than 2 drinks daily)
Early detection and treatment of osteoporosis can prevent unnecessary fractures and
further bone loss. This simple test takes only 10 minutes to scan and diagnose.
