Alexa Henderson, MD, comes from a long line of doctors dating back to her great-grandfather. From a very early age, she wanted to practice medicine, and her abiding interest has always been to treat and prevent disease, including cancer, using the latest in medical science.
She began her career in 1992 as a Registered Nurse before entering the University of Indiana School of Medicine in 2002. After graduating in 2006, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, serving as Chief Resident and recipient of the Resident Research Award her final year.
Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Henderson has worked as a Hospitalist, Medical Director, and Chief of Medicine. Yet, she always maintained a keen interest in functional medicine, bioidentical hormones, gastrointestinal issues, trauma, and the prevention and treatment of cancer. Her experience treating patients with all stages of cancer in hospitals and private practice fueled her desire to learn more about safer, more humane treatments for cancer and other chronic diseases.
Her interest in Integrative Medicine led her to continue her studies, and in 2018 she was awarded the prestigious designation of Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Metabolic and Functional Medicine (FAAMFM). This designation, plus her independent research, has enabled Dr. Henderson to pursue her longtime passion for transforming lives. Combining traditional medical practice with the latest research and cutting-edge therapies can address the root causes behind disease processes instead of merely masking symptoms.
Dr. Henderson’s nutrition strategies, bioidentical hormone replacement, human optimization, stress reduction techniques, and knowledge of complementary cancer therapies provide her patients with personalized programs for achieving and maintaining optimal health and wellness. Equally important, she combines her love of medicine with empathy and individualized care for each patient.
Dr. Henderson enjoys running, yoga, meditation, cooking, reading, and spending time with her family in her spare time.
